No More Posts this Week

I had originally intended to at least be able to post through Wednesday of this week but preparation for the Brand New Conference is in full force. Today we fly to Chicago, tomorrow is set-up day, and then Thursday and Friday is the conference. We'll be back Monday with content.

Many thanks to our ADVx3 Partners

A Tale of Two Bridges

With thousands of bridges in New York State deemed structurally deficient, there are two choices: repair or rebuild. The 60-year-old Tappan Zee Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge are the latest examples. Read the story.

A Refutation of the Elements of Typographic Style

"My point is that it's counterproductive, counter creative, to morally charge the art of working with type. We wouldn't moralize cadmium red or C sharp major when teaching brush technique or the scales. To do so in typography stunts the full breadth of expression that designers need to draw upon."

Cheap Art

cheap art

Here’s an interesting new project by the folks of Krrb: Cheap Art features local classifieds dedicated to buying and selling artwork priced under $1,000. The idea is based off the Bread and Puppet Cheap Art Manifesto. The folks behind Cheap Art believe art should be available to everyone, not just the privileged. The ‘Cheap’ in ‘Cheap Art’ is not meant to degrade the value of art but rather celebrate the everyday consumption of it. They believe walls don’t need to be decorated with mass-produced prints from Ikea, but rather original works created by our neighbors. Check it out: buycheapart.com

"By placing email within our everyday physical spaces it may get us to look at the familiarity of email in a new light; we may even learn to love it again." Six Monkeys explores our interactions with email through physical Internet connected objects. Only brilliant, as expected, since it comes from Brendan Dawes.

Lost GoPro

I just had chills when my studiomate Bas told me the story of the above video. What you see is the footage of his GoPro that he lost 1.5 years ago while filming this Like Knows Like video.

The GoPro fell off Kelsey’s surfboard and waited over a year on the ocean floor to be discovered by a young scuba diver called Carlo Fezzi. Carlo posted a still from the movie on Instagram, someone recognized the guy and tagged him. And just like that, the internet came to the rescue!

I am simply amazed that the camera held up all this time. Quite a testament to their quality. The GoPro marketing team should be all over this story!

I love the internet so much.
