This flat, reusable water bottle made me look: It’s memobottle, a slimline, BPA free, dishwasher-friendly, reusable bottle that resembles the size and shape of pieces of paper.

New Logo and Identity for Vistaprint by Tank Design and In-house

(Est. 1995) "Vistaprint serves more than 16 million micro businesses and consumers each year with a broad range of customised printing, graphic design and marketing products and services at an affordable price. With a unique business model supported by an innovative use of technology, high-volume production facilities, direct marketing expertise and personalised customer service, Vistaprint offers a wide range of products and services for micro businesses and consumers. Globally Vistaprint employs over 4,600 people, operates more than 25 websites globally and ships to more than 130 countries around the world."

Design by: Tank Design (Boston, MA)
Keith Manning, Dave Ball, and Karen Bedard (In-house)

Opinion/Notes: Despite a lackluster logo history during its 19 years of business, Vistaprint has done quite well for itself printing a monumental amount of stuff to the tune of more than $1.2 billion in revenue in 2013. It could have easily kept going another 19 years with mundane, laughable, CMYK logos but has chosen instead to adopt a more mature and relatively sophisticated new identity. Its main visual premise is a healthy serving of overlays in the shape of a custom alphabet that is liberally used in applications and as the main monogram of the company, which is… fine. There is nothing overly appealing or annoying about it; it sort of exists without ruffling any feathers. It's a major improvement by comparison but, as far as it being "wicked cool"… that wouldn't be the category I would put this in.

Select Quote: After researching global identity trends and executing many logo design studies, we determined that a simply designed, dynamic identity would best set us apart in the competitive landscape, enhance our leadership in customization and personalization, and deliver against our brand strategy. And it looks wicked cool.

Made you Look Film on grainedit..com

Made You Look is a documentary about the UK DIY graphic arts scene of the 21st century. Via candid interviews with top British creatives, publishers and agency owners the film explores the fact that more people than ever seem to be turning to analogue means of creating things, even though we are living at the height of the digital era. Sam Arthur, Adrian Johnson, Kate Moross, and Anthony Burril are just a few of  the folks featured in this fine film.

Made You Look is due for limited theatrical release in 2015. For more info visit the official website.

Goodbye Digest, hello Lagom

Illustration for Goodbye Digest, hello Lagom

Earlier this week, I announced the amicable closure of Viewport Industries, the company I’ve run with Keir Whitaker since 2011. The demise of the company means the demise of our one remaining product: the lifestyle magazine Digest.

Or does it?

Well, yes and no. You see, although Digest is indeed going away after just one issue, we — that is, my wife Samantha and I — are about to publish the first issue of a new magazine called Lagom. The two magazines share origins, and you’ll certainly recognise similar type and grid systems in both, but rather than take sole ownership of Digest and publish #2, we decided to rethink our goals entirely; to burn one publication so that another could rise from its ashes.

The result is a magazine with a different — and much tighter — editorial focus, many more pages (128, in fact), and a totally different format: A4 (210 × 297mm / 8.27 × 11.69in) in size, perfect-bound, and with a foil-blocked cover. Just like 8 Faces, our aim has been to create a magazine you’ll want to keep on your bookshelf.

Lagom #1 tease

I’ve got many more details to share with you shortly — including some photos of the digitally-printed proof copy we’ve just had back from the printers — but for now, head over to our blog, where we’ve been posting a whole load of teasers for the magazine’s content. Oh, and we’d certainly appreciate any likes, follows, etc. you fancy sending our way on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Lagom #1 will be published on Wednesday 24th September. I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on!
